The Berean Bible Institute, founded by Bishop Francis L. Smith in the Spring of 1964, became the answer to a long awaited need. There were people in Akron and the surrounding area who desired basic systematic Bible training. This type of Bible training was not available for various reasons. For the very same reasons, an evening Bible College was born: Northeastern Ohio Bible College. This college was supported by First Apostolic Faith Church for one academic year.
The tide was against the Northern Ohio Bible College in the year of 1966. With the untimely demise of the school, it seemed to be the death of the ideal and the vision; but through the years, the need was never ever present and the vision still nurtured by the man of God.
The need began to be fulfilled in 1975, when Northeastern Ohio Bible College became a satellite school for the Aenon Bible College of Columbus, Ohio. It was under the supervision of two consecrated Aenon graduates, Elder and Sister Laurence Nevels. Aenon gave it blessings to the Akron-Aenon Branch, to proceed on its own in 1978.
Academic curriculum became a part of the growth of college in the fall of 1977 when the directorship was placed in the hands of Mrs. Lucille Anderson-Hines. She was a lifelong educator and counselor in the Akron Public School System. With the Bible training curriculum already well established by her predecessor, the new director's concern for academic achievement was another part of the answer of the initial prayer.
Berean was opened to everyone who sincerely desired to attain a greater depth of the knowledge and understanding of the Bible and operated with this mission until the demise of Dr. Anderson-Hines in Fall of 2009.
Berean was re-opened for the Fall of 2012 and placed in the capable hands of Dr. Lula M. Hampton who is a retired counselor/educator from the Akron Board of Education. Thus far she has reinstated the Institute with the State of Ohio.
